Good afternoon everybody, it’s time for another Brick Bucks update! I’m Jim, your funny and humorous male staff reporter here at Brick Bucks, where we talk about LEGO investing and reselling. Today, I want to go over a set that I am incredibly excited about. Now, I have been trying my hardest to resist the allure of LEGO Star Wars for years, but if LEGO keeps coming out with sets like this, you might just see me diving headfirst into the world of Star Wars LEGO.
So, let’s talk about the LEGO Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina set. This beauty has finally been revealed, thanks to Brick Fanatics. It’s set to launch later this month, although I’m not sure if it’s going to be available in the US or in another country first. The set is said to be enormous, with a whopping 3,187 pieces. There’s no official price yet, but if I had to guess, it would probably be around $300, maybe even $350. But hey, that’s a great price considering what you’re getting!
Now, let me tell you, the nostalgia is just oozing out of this set. It has everything you’ve ever wanted in a cantina set, and I am beyond excited for it. The box art is also fantastic. I personally love it when Star Wars sets have that solid black box color.
Now, this isn’t the first time LEGO has released a cantina set, but it is the first time they’re doing it as part of the Ultimate Collector Series. As a LEGO investing YouTube channel, I’m going to do my best to predict the future price of this set when it eventually retires. Of course, I’m going to try my hardest to do that without comparing apples to oranges, but it might be a bit difficult considering this is a large set.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the previous cantina sets. The first one we have here is currently retailing for $188. It had a steady increase in price over time, especially during Q4 last year. I don’t think the new set will affect the price of this one too much.
Then we have a smaller cantina set, currently priced at $72. This one had a slightly more rapid increase in price compared to the previous one. Again, I don’t think the new set will have a big impact on this one either.
Now, how are we going to predict the future price of the new cantina set when it hasn’t even been released yet? Well, let me ask you a couple of questions. Which set excites you more: the cantina ultimate collector series or the sandcrawler? For me, it’s a no-brainer. The cantina excites me way more.
If we look at the performance of the sandcrawler set on camelcamelcamel, it took a while for it to catch on strong. The price dipped a bit, maybe because there was another smaller sandcrawler set available. But overall, it had a steady increase in price. On the other hand, the cantina set retired a while ago and had a significantly better return on investment.
Another question: Does the cantina excite you more or does the speed crawler excite you more? Again, for me, it’s the cantina. Surprisingly, the speed crawler has had a decent return on investment, and I can’t explain why.
So, here’s the big question: Is a 200 percent return on investment for the new cantina set unreasonable? In my opinion, not at all. There’s so much nostalgia and epic scenes associated with this set, I think it’s very reasonable to expect a high return on investment.
