Understanding The Power Of Collector’s Demand

Many people find it hard to believe that a Lego set can increase in value after retirement, but let me tell you, it happens. I’ve got a Lego investing business, and even after showing my sales, some folks just can’t wrap their heads around why someone would pay two or three times the original price for a retired Lego set.

In a recent news story, rapper Post Malone shelled out a whopping two million dollars for a Magic: The Gathering card. Why? Well, there was only one of that card in existence in the entire world, and that’s the power of collector mentality. When you have a passion for collecting something and it becomes rare or scarce, the desire to have it intensifies.

Take, for example, Lego collectors. If you have four out of the five Star Wars helmets, and the last one has been retired for a couple of years, many people would be willing to pay three times the original price just to complete their collection. That’s the effect of scarcity and the power of the collector’s mentality.

Lego sets are intentionally designed to be collectible. They want you to buy not just one set, but multiples. And this is where the investment potential comes in. When you understand the collector’s mentality and its impact on demand, you can see the value of retired Lego sets as potential investments.

We all have certain products or goods that hold special meaning to us or are part of a collection we feel passionate about. These are the items that we are willing to spend more money on, stretching our price elasticity. And that is why understanding collector’s demand is key to successful Lego investing.
