Father Teaches Son How To Be A LEGO Investor!

What is up everybody welcome back to another interview and this is a very very special one because it’s not just one guest here we’ve got two we have William and his son Liam here who are both Lego investors and absolutely crushing it with Lego investing so I’m Really excited to uh to get this going and to kind of learn more about what you guys are doing um before we jump in here the first thing is you know and this was this came about because uh William’s part of my membership and we were kind of chatting and he mentioned Uh he introduced Li to the group a couple days ago and let us all know that uh he is bringing his son along for the ride with the Lego investing journey and I just was really inspired by that I think it’s phenomenal I don’t have gids Yet but that’s exactly what I would love to do uh when I do and kind of inspire my children to learn about business and about Lego investing and all this great stuff so I think this is going to be a fun one really excited so guys welcome Uh to the show how are you good we’re excited to be here yeah I’m I’m pumped for this I’m pumped for this Li how are you uh good kind of nervous nervous for being on camera yeah there’s there’s nothing to worry about it’s all it’s all good if if uh if we Say anything we don’t want we can cut it all out that’s the beauty of editing um I love your hat that’s that’s the most cool hat ever yeah um so I’d love to learn about your love for Lego because obviously from the background here uh you’re not just Lego investors you’re also Lego Fans what was that Liam most of the sets I uh built like I have the Darth Vaders Castle uh I built that by myself yeah completely on your own well not really on my own but most of it like the stickers my dad always helps me with the stickers yeah the stickers are The annoying part yeah they should just make Lego prints love the UC one yeah I help with the UCS slave one you got some of the large Technic sets behind you there some of the helmets let’s see so he’s got this is the kind of the display but we have a Bunch more that we just can’t find any place to display them and then he’s got stuff in his room and then one day we’d like to build these up here they retired you know the last two years last year it’s hard to do the phone I’m sorry I apologize the phone’s like reversed Anyway uh yeah so we had a lot of fun building that a Kia furniture with Home Depot trim and paint family project and then you know they he’s got a few of the shorter shelves that our three-year-old can’t get to uh you know the uh he can Get to so he keeps some of his smaller stuff on there so we have three sons and uh they all love Lego in their own way one of them is in the Duplo and then the other two are into Lego and U oh yeah so It’s a whole Lego a Lego family and how where did it all begin then so William did you um were you a fan and then kind of brought your your kids into or was it the other way around your kids got into it and then you saw the appeal as well I Would love to say that you know I was been a fan forever and all that like everybody else seems to say but uh I that’s not the truth it’s this guy right here got me into it so I kind of vouged to never have Lego in my house when I Was when we started kids because I thought it would be a mess you know and I wasn’t that into it um and then as he started to get him for birthdays and Christmases we built them together and had lots of fun and I saw the cool I’ve Always been a big Star Wars fan and I thought it was so cool with all the stuff they had so we started collecting a little bit and then as we collected he got more into it and struggling to get to the straight a mark he was really Working hard A’s and B’s and to pump him up and get him motivated I offered to get him any Lego set he wants because we never buy the big ones and he happened to do some research in found a ghost the ghost was it the old ghost yeah it was Like for 300 500 it was very I couldn’t believe it I said why we’re watching rebels in here how is this set like $500 or whatever and he goes I don’t know but you said you would get it for me so uh and I was I was intrigued and we went down That rabbit hole thankfully he did not make Straight A’s but I he got really close so I hooked him up with a I I still hooked him up with a really nice set would I gave him the best bin duel I’m your father oh best than Jewel okay Open still and he has it it’s one of his first Legos we could say but uh yeah so that’s he he um he introduced me to the world of Lego investing in a way and then I found you and many others and I chose you know to kind of focus on your Path and stuff and it’s been really good man um things have been fantastic it’s really changed my family a lot for the better because it’s very fun and interesting Journey for us to to all enjoy even my wife gets at first I have to admit you know she was like you’re Crazy and and I was very transparent with her and you know um so yep I stopped contributing at work and started contributing to this you know what I mean for my for my 401 kind of thing right yeah yeah and it’s exciting and fun it’s a daily thing for us now yeah Yeah and I like I just love the you know the family business approach to it you know and and you mention that your wife is is kind of getting interested now that is an area that I see a lot of hesitation for a lot of new Lego investors is getting your spouse to Understand what you’re doing it’s not easy of course um but let’s just take it back a second because Li I’d love to know about where you discovered Lego or do you remember some of your early Lego sets and what you were excited about when you first started with Lego Collecting so like my first SE Lego set that I got or or even just some of the early ones what were you first or even what themes were you first interested in my first ever Lego set was a Star Wars Lego set and it was from Phantom Menace oh great and Duel of Fates I think yeah the Duel of Fates it had Quon young one and rth Maul sadly that got destroyed by my baby brother oh wow it’s still here we just yeah we’re still trying to find the pieces I have Darth Maul and I only have Darth Maul though still trying to look for the pieces you got to rebuild it all yeah and so Star Wars has Star Wars always been one of your big uh favorite themes yep all time it’s definitely one of the most Popular I think and you know um the the great thing about Star Wars Lego sets is that they tend to hold their value really well so it’s a good choice for investing if you’re into that kind of thing and le do you have any tips or advice for other kids who might be interested in Lego investing and want to get started well I think when we had that motivation to get straight as or um you the motivation to maybe like get a good grade or something you can do you can say hey dad can I get a Lego set if I get an a or a B or whatever you can maybe um give a little Push and when you’re helping them you know it’s kind of fun I think building canals and you’re doing something good and something fun and you get a Lego set out of it that’s what I really love about that yeah that’s great advice I mean using Lego as a motivator for school is such a creative way to get kids excited about learning and achieving their goals and I love that you enjoy building the sets with your dad it’s a great bonding activity too so speaking of building and investing do you have any favorite sets that you’ve built recently or any sets that you’re really looking forward to adding to your collection well, right behind me I have the Super Star Destroyer well not built because it’s very very big and very very expensive that it that it that is a monster set I’ve seen pictures of it it’s incredible and I can imagine the building process is going to be quite the challenge but I’m sure you and your dad will tackle it and uh it will be an amazing addition to your collection so I’m really excited for you to build that one anything else that you’re really looking forward to um I’m really looking forward to building a lot of sets that come out in the future because there is supposed to be a lot of really cool stuff coming out and um yeah there’s definitely a lot to look forward to and Lego always continues to amaze us with new sets and themes so it’s always exciting to see what’s coming up next so William let’s talk a little bit about the investment side of things what are some of the strategies or tips that you’ve learned about Lego investing that you think would be valuable for our audience well you know um I there’s a lot of strategies that I’ve kind of uh investigated and have played with and but I think the number one thing is if somebody is looking like what should they do uh number one is to learn the Lego market I think that’s super important just know what’s gonna retire go to the Lego website and you know hit in 2 years or 1 year and so everything that uh those– the ugliest sets to me when I first started what I didn’t like are the best investments a lot of the times I mean we like them all but I mean I love Star Wars uh and I get some of the small Star Wars sets and uh you know so I kind of was just buying things looking for deals and sticking them in the closet and see what happens um but I’ve seen a lot of good return so the number one tip I have is– is just to learn the market it’s important to know what’s popular what’s going to retire and what might be a good investment in the long run so that’s great advice now before we wrap this up do you have any final thoughts or anything else that you’d like to share with our audience well I think it’s fantastic that you’re getting Liam involved with Lego investing at such a young age he’s already building his Lego empire and I think it’s great that you’re able to bond over this hobby and make it a fun family activity as well so kudos to you guys for being such a dynamic Lego investing duo and I’m really excited to see where your Lego journey takes you in the future thank you so much for joining us today it’s been a blast talking to you both and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish in the world of Lego investing well thank you so much and thanks for having us on your show appreciate it really great to be here.
