Good afternoon everybody, it’s time for another Brick Bucks update! I know I promised to review the Bugatti Lego set, and trust me, I heard you the first time. Thanks for your patience, and if anyone else has any set requests, just drop them below.
Today, we’re diving into the Lego Speed Champions Bugatti Chiron set, number 75878. Now, I wasn’t sure if I was going to do a video on this set because it’s already retired. However, it’s interesting to analyze why this set has such a high return on investment (ROI). Maybe we can find some similar sets currently on sale and grab a piece of that sweet ROI.
This set originally retailed for $14.99, and let me tell you, it took off like a monkey shot into outer space. Just look at that beautiful chart on Camel Camel Camel. No COVID bump here, just pure profit potential. One thing to note though, those dots on the chart mean Amazon doesn’t have any inventory left. Low inventory can drive up demand, making a set more valuable.
If we take a look at Brick Set, we can see that this Bugatti Chiron had a production run of about a year and a few months, which is pretty typical. Sleeper sets like this, being the first of their kind, tend to be more popular and have a higher ROI compared to subsequent sets. And let’s not forget the inventory issues, or lack thereof, which contribute to the rarity and value of this set.
Speaking of expensive sets, let’s also explore the Technic Bugatti. This set is a true gem, but when we check the sales rank, it’s not as high as you’d expect for such a pricey set. Surprise, surprise, it’s only ranked 445 in toys and building sets. On the other hand, if we look at the Las Vegas rank, it’s at 5,100! Now, how many people do you hear talking about Las Vegas compared to the Bugatti? Not many, but the Bugatti is far more popular.
Another interesting tidbit is that the Technic Bugatti has never been discounted on Amazon according to Camel Camel Camel. And why would they discount something with such high demand? It has more popularity than the beloved Las Vegas set, which is quite an achievement.
Now, remember, the Speed Champions Bugatti has been out for about two and a half years and might retire at the end of next year. It’s a great investment, but there are new Technic sets coming out, so the future is uncertain. Will the Bugatti Technic reach the same ROI as the Speed Champions set? I’m not so sure, especially considering the price tag. But if you have thousands of dollars to spare, go for it!
To compare, let’s take a look at the Porsche set, which retired in January 2019 but still had inventory left. The Porsche was a $300 set, and it didn’t really take off until early 2020. So, maybe the Bugatti Technic will follow a similar trajectory. Only time will tell.
