The Lego Botanical Collection 10309 Succulents set is the latest addition to Lego’s quickly growing botanical line complete with curious leaves.
It was released along with the Botanical 10311 Orchid set, marking the first wave of Lego’s 2022 Botanical line.
Previous Botanical sets such as the Lego 40524 Sunflower and the Lego 40461 Tulips have been geared more toward younger Lego fans. However, this latest Botanical set is to be specifically for adults and lovers of real plants.
So how does this affect the quality and build of the set? And are Lego succulents worth replacing your real succulent plants?

Box Contents
As the set creates 3 groups of succulents, Lego has provided 3 instruction booklets. One for each group which includes 3 popular plants.
771 pieces have been split into 3 of the bags, matching up to the separate instruction booklets. This is so each of the 3 intended builders can have their own instructions and a variety of pieces to work with.
Various captions throughout each booklet provide a commentary of interesting information about the plant you’re building and some general Lego-related facts.
The box itself showcases all 9 plants together, scenically arranged with a mature color scheme. Some of the types of plants include a Moon Cactus, Ball Cactus, & an orange Echeveria.
The front pages of the instruction booklets follow a similar kind of style but features their designated group’s plants.
Building Notes
As the 3 instruction manuals and designated bags would suggest, this build is intended to be built by up to 3 people.
The 9 succulent buildable models are separated methodically so that each builder will deal with a similar difficulty level while building. Though overall, the set has a moderate level of difficulty.
Each succulent design uses creative and brilliant techniques that test the limits of the pieces used. However, being one of the more innovative models means that this set will have some complicated steps.
This is a build where you should trust the process. To begin with, the build will look nothing like the lively succulents you would find in a garden center.
But in the last few steps, the plants really come together and make the more complicated sections worth it.
If you want the building process to pass by quicker, it will be better to build this set independently.
Like any co-building set, working with a partner (or 2, in this case) will slow down the build as you wait for the others to complete their sections.
LEGO Minifigures & Characters
There are no Minifigures included in this set as the main focus is the plants. But each individual succulent has its own sense of character.
The Lego faux plants and botanical models are very similar to their real-life inspiration, with the designers doing a great job of catching the individuality and personality of the plants.
If it were not for the Lego feel, then the set could be mistaken for a piece of nature.
Of course, there is only so much personality you can fit into a fake succulent, but Lego does a great job.
Collectible Display vs Playability
The Botanical Succulent set is marketed to Lego fans 18 + as the set doesn’t have any playability and is intended for display purposes only – much like real succulents.
The set produces 9 succulents that can be displayed either as one big group, 3 smaller groups, or individual plants.
It is one of the most diversely displayable botanical sets that Lego has produced so far. And one of the most beautiful looking.
There are ample muted colors used. So if you want your fake Lego succulents to blend in with the rest of your home’s shelf display, then they are discreet enough to do so for the most part.
More Brick For Your Buck
It is safe to assume that if you plan on buying this set for a Lego fan under the age of 18, they will not get as much joy or use out of it as an adult.
The Lego succulents are for display purposes only. While they do look great as faux plants in your home, they will not be worth the $49.99 to a child.
However, for an adult fan of Lego, they will have far more value. You can liven up your home for considerably less than what you would typically spend on 9 real succulents.
Better yet, these are plants that can not die!
You can simply build them with your friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon and scatter them around your home for the ultimate low-maintenance display.
Potential Lego Investment Value
The overall part out value is very good because of some of the newer pieces introduced. There are some investable pieces that are included in the set.
For example, the set uses several large sand green claws which are selling on Bricklink for between $3 – $14 per piece as of 4/2022.
The set also includes 4 green forest men’s hats. You can expect to sell 1 of these pieces for between $1.89 – $17.14 (as of 4/2022).
New Pieces and Colors
Several new pieces are being introduced with this succulent set, such as:
- Yellowish green eggs (x 35)
- Bright light orange pentagonal slopes (x 4)
- Dark red 1 x 1 pyramids (x 8)
- Lavender shoulder armor (x 8)
- Olive green 2 x 4 slopes (x 8)
- Coral 3 x 3 radar (x 1)
- Sand green mini-dome ( x 1)
- Sand blue quarter-circle tiles (x 12)
- Sand blue 2 x 2 boat studs (x 4)
You could compare the sale prices of similar pieces in different colors on Bricklink to estimate what you can expect from parting out this set.
However, the value of these new pieces may fluctuate once this has been out for some time.
That being said, because the pieces are new and will have only been included in this set upon its release, they will be considered rare pieces.
If you are quick to sell the pieces before other sets start including them then you could make a marginal profit.
As a new set, to get 100% ROI on your investment if you purchased this at retail cost, would be to sell this for $125 + depending on the marketplace.
Final Thoughts
The Lego Botanical Collection 10309 Succulents set is one that any adult looking to make their home more interesting should consider buying.
The 9 types of succulents are lively and true to their living names-sakes.
Even if you are not a fan of Lego’s Botanical Collection, any Lego investor looking for rare and unique parts will certainly get their fill with 9 new unique Lego pieces.
Though you should snatch this set up quickly if you intend to buy it as it promises to be a popular one based on positive reviews from those with early access to the set.
