Lego 40522 Valentine’s Day Valentine Lovebirds Review

Lego 40522 Valentine's Day Valentine Lovebirds Review

Since 2010, Lego has been producing Valentine’s Day Lego sets, but it wasn’t until 2013 that Lego launched their LEGO Seasonal series. The Lego 40522 Valentine’s Day Valentine Lovebirds set is the latest addition to this series.

The Lovebirds set is another improvement of the LEGO Bird Design series, basing the two bird characters off of actual Fischer lovebirds.

Since its release, Lego fans have loved the romantic aspect of Lego’s Valentine Lovebirds. On the official LEGO site, the set has gained one positive review after another, reaching a 100% 5-star rating.

But how does Lego 40522 Valentine’s Day Valentine Lovebirds compare to the other 11 Valentines sets that Lego has released?

Let’s break it down.

Box Contents

Though the box art on the LEGO 40522 – Love Birds set box is nothing extravagant, less does equal more.

The piece is displayed against a minimalist pink sky backdrop, really sticking to the Valentine’s Day theme. There are even darker purple clouds in the background to give the impression that there are a couple of lovebirds perched on a tree.

Within the box there are 6 bags and 2 instruction manuals. This is peculiar for a set of this size. However, LEGO intends the set to be built with your partner.

One manual is for one of the lovebirds and the other is for the display base and second lovebird.

A fun Easter egg from this set is a teaser at the back of the instruction manual for the next seasonal Lego set.

Building Notes

This LEGO seasonal build was not particularly challenging, taking less than an hour to complete.

Though this is only because it is expected to be built by two people. Waiting for the other person to complete their half could take a little longer.

There are a few fiddly details, such as the copious smatterings of heart brick scattered around the trunk. But the lovebirds themselves are very easy to build.

The best is supposed to be a relaxing, fun activity to do with your partner, which is what it is.

LEGO Minifigures & Characters

There are no minifigures included with the set. Instead, the birds are the focus of the set’s characterization.

Lego has gone all out with both the set, designing two attractive lovebirds full of character.

The colorful birds are identical in build, but one has an orange gradient from its head to its chest. The other is the same but yellow.

These color choices are true to the gendered color of real lovebirds. A bright red broad beak completes the authentic lovebird look.

Collectible Display vs Playability

The Lego 40522 Valentine Lovebirds is definitely designed to be a display piece. From the detailed log base scattered with pink hearts and leaves, to the floating heart between the two birds.

Even the official LEGO pictures of the build show it as a display piece rather than as a playable set.

The only playable part of the set is the turntable pieces that the lovebirds are perched upon. They allow the birds to twist and meet each other in the middle for a kiss. Likewise, the lovebirds themselves are easily removed from their bases but have otherwise unmovable features.

It is all very cute and romantic, but not very playable.

More Brick For Your Buck

For the amount of pieces included in the Lego Lovebird set, $12.99 is a bargain price. Especially if you plan to gift the set to a loved one.

As an avid LEGO builder, the ease of the set may make it seem like it does not have enough value.  The value does stack up in terms of piece count and the time spent putting it together.

But if you are planning on reselling the set later on, then it won’t hurt grab a few extra sets to gift to friends later.

Potential Lego Investment Value

For a set of this size, you would expect to pay between $15 – 20, so already the set is worth more per piece with an average of $0.04.

To reach 100% return on investment (ROI) after market fees, you would need to sell this set for $35.  This is based on a buy cost of $12.99.  You may be able to get this for a slight discount towards the end of the year, but seasonal sets have a short cycle, so don’t wait too long.

Another note about this seasonal LEGO set is there are no unique parts. The only bricks that hold real value are the 2 bright green slopes which are worth $0.39 per piece on Bricklink (as of 1/2022).

The part out value of the whole Lego 40522 Valentine Lovebirds set is roughly $44. But, because the set contains mostly regular pieces, you would be better off keeping the set together if you invest in it.

Based on past Valentine’s Day set trends, the Lego 40522 Valentine Lovebirds set could have a decent annual growth after retirement.

As a whole Lego Valentines sets have had an average increase of value compared to other seasonal sets.

Or, put your money into more valuable seasonal sets like the next Lego Christmas set. Though if you do plan on buying a Lego Valentine Lovebirds set, make sure to do it soon.

Lego have a track record of pulling their Valentines sets off the shelf after only a few months.
